church asked him to help out at Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland (MOWCM). He agreed. That was 22 years ago.

Last year, the drivers from MOWCM logged over 66,000 hours, driving the equivalent of 19 trips around the earth. MOWCM ( www.mealsonwheelsmd.org ) serves over one million home-delivered meals to almost 3,000 clients in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, Howard, Frederick, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

With its slogan of “More Than a Meal,” MOWCM goes beyond delivering nutritious meals to those who are homebound. “Our drivers have a ‘visitor’ with them; one drives the route, the visitor delivers the food and checks up on our clients,” Guy Arceneaux, senior director of marketing and communications for Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, describes. “We think of ourselves as an extension of the health care infrastructure because we keep our clients from feeling isolated and depressed. We provide human interaction and a lot more.”

MOWCM volunteers are often a lifeshape they’d be in, but over time, they became friends and they would tell me what they needed. I always felt like I made their lives better.”

Eventually Brent switched from visitor to driver for his twice-a-week stint as a volunteer. “As I got older, staying in the car was easier than going up and down the stairs all the time, but I still bowl tenpins every Tuesday and Wednesday.”

MOWCM has corporate and school groups that come in to volunteer and work side by side with the kitchen staff. Garden clubs have made bouquets to give to clients; other volunteers knit scarves. There are many Lunch Bunch groups that spend their lunch hour delivering meals in the area where they work.

Orientation takes place once a week and it’s always packed. “We couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers”, says Arceneaux, “and there are more than 2,000 of them. It happens every day without a hitch.”
