Your choice comes down to Original Medicare (Parts A and B), a Medigap plan for what they don’t cover and Plan D for your prescription medications.

Or you can opt for a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) and get all of the above in one package plus some extras.

Although it sounds simple, depending on your health issues, it can become quite complicated to choose the plan that best suits your needs.

To get help with decision making, start with the Medicare website: www.medicare.gov. There you can sign up for Medicare, research your options in your area and get answers to many of your questions. If you would rather talk to a person, toll-free numbers are provided.

Each state has a Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to help seniors understand their health insurance options and rights. Counselors provide in-person and telephone assistance to seniors free of charge. They are a good resource to help you understand your many options.

In Maryland call 410-767-1100 or 800-243-3425 or online: www.aging.maryland.gov/Pages/StateHealthInsuranceProgram.aspx. •
