Beat the heat with CA’s 23 outdoor pools

By Tripp Laino

One of the best ways to beat the heat when temperatures start rising this summer is simple — jumping into one of CA’s 23 outdoor pools, conveniently located throughout Columbia.

Each facility has a main pool and a water feature for kids. Depending on the pool, you and your children can also look forward to enjoying waterslides, basketball hoops, fountains and splash pads.

Learn to swim

Generations of kids have learned to swim at CA pools. This year, we’ve added new lessons: a four-day program held Monday-Thursday, with a free Friday lesson included either as a makeup day or extra session!

There will also be free swim lessons on Tuesday, June 11 at Dickinson Pool and Thursday, June 13 at Kendall Ridge Pool. Each has three time slots available: 5pm, 5:30pm or 6pm. Space is limited. Register at  or call 410-312-6332.

And the free World’s Largest Swim Lesson is set for Thursday, June 20 at 6pm at Hopewell Mini-WaterPark. Registration begins at 5:30pm.

Join our swim league

Columbia Neighborhood Swim League has 14 swim teams for youth ages 18 and younger from the Columbia, Clarksville and Ellicott City areas. The season starts May 28 through July 27 and includes practices, swim meets, pep rallies, and other fun team activities. Check out the program at no charge from May 28-31 at your “home pool.” Learn more at

Inclusive pools

CA also has worked to make its pools accessible to all in the community. Several of them have pool lifts and beach entries. Five pools have been classified as ADA-compliant: Dorsey Hall, Hawthorn, Kendall Ridge, Longfellow and River Hill. More information is available at

Also, we’re pleased that Macgill’s Common has been designated as a sensory-friendly pool! Contact the Howard County Autism Society at 410-290-3466 or info@howard-autism. org for more information.

New this year is a water journey splashpad at Running Brook Pool. Your kids can experience a new type of play with a fun water channel using gates and bridges to manipulate the direction of the water, as well as race floating objects.
