Actors dressed in ornate gowns and other theater garb entertained the more than 450 attendees at the 22nd annual Celebration of the Arts Gala— a $50-to-$100-a-ticket annual event at Howard Community College’s Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center.

The event netted $75,000, which will be used to support various arts-related activities throughout the county. Some 110 volunteers were needed to produce the event, according to Stephanie Schuster, development manager for the Howard County Arts Council.

Classic comfort

Jin Lee knew she wanted to be comfortable and stylish when she attended the Celebration of the Arts Gala, where her daughter’s music teacher was being honored.

The 47-year-old homemaker from Woodstock turned to one of her favorite stores— Talbots— to achieve the look.

Her red jacket and pants ensemble looked powerful and stood out against the expected silhouettes of evening gowns and cocktail dresses.

“I wanted to be comfortable and wear something that makes me look thin,” she said with a laugh. “I thought it was classic.”

Lee’s husband, Christian, approved: “She looks beautiful. She’s our fashion consultant. She dresses the rest of the family.”

The Lees attended the event because their daughter’s trumpet teacher, also the director of bands at Centennial High School, David Matchim, was being recognized with the Howie Award for Outstanding Arts Educator.

“He’s been great,” Jin Lee said, in reference to Matchim. “He’s so personable. He’s been very supportive. He goes above and beyond. A lot of the students call him a counselor. That’s how much they appreciate him.”

The Lees’ daughter, Isabel, has been a student of Matchim’s since fourth grade, when he started giving her private trumpet lessons. She’s now a junior at Centennial High School.

Lee said that Matchim has been a driving force in her daughter’s success.

“She’s fabulous because of all the ways he’s taught her,” she said.
